Today marks the beginning of a new feature at Feeding on Folly — Saturday Smile — where I’ll share with you something that made me smile during the week, be it a site or blog I found, something I read, or an experience I had. I’ll share it with the hope of making you smile too.
And here’s the best part: You’re invited to join me in this project of spreading smiles. Did something special happen this last week? Maybe you overheard a funny conversation, discovered a great new product, or your kid said the darnedest thing. Put it in the comments! Give us all a Saturday Smile!
I thought I was only going to introduce this feature today and wait until next week to begin, but I had a little encounter at the grocery store this morning that put a smile on my face.
First some background: When getting dressed this morning, I realized I was in a rut of wearing jeans and t-shirts. Granted, I look positively smashing in jeans and a t-shirt. Even so. Jeans and a t-shirt. I needed to mix things up a bit. So I put on a simple dress, added a pair of flats, and off to the store I went. I needed to buy a few ingredients for next Wednesday’s post.
The store I went to is called Fry’s Food. One thing about them, they seem to have a rather progressive employment policy, as I’ve often noticed they’ll have clerks who not that long ago, might have had difficulty finding mainstream employment. This in itself is reason to smile, but what I want to tell you about is something that happened as I was leaving the store. An employee was gathering up carts and greeted me. I won’t describe him to you, beyond saying he is one of the employees who are rightfully benefiting from these better hiring practices. Here is our conversation in its entirety:
Have a nice day, Ma’am.
You’re welcome. Have a nice weekend, too.
You’re welcome. I like your dress.
You’re welcome. It’s very pretty. It’s fashionable.
*chuckle* … Oh, well, thank you.
You’re welcome. In high school I took a fashion class.
Oh really? … That’s cool.
I got an A in it.
Yeah. So you can believe me when I say your dress is pretty, because I know what fashion is.
… Oh! … Yeah, I guess you would … Thank you. Thank you very much!
You’re welcome. Have a good weekend.
I will. You have a good weekend too.
